The 8th DRC Summer School “The Danube Rectors’ Conferences"
August 26 th, 2011
The 8th summer school “The Danube Rectors’ Conferences” (DRC) devoted to regional cooperation was entitled “EU Strategy for the Danube Region- Perspectives for the Future” and held in the period 3- 9 July 2011 in Vienna. This gathering has traditionally dealt with different modes of improving international cooperation in Central Europe, primarily among young researchers and other members of academic community. DRC represents a true basis for such cooperation as it encompasses 51 research institutions from 12 countries of the Danube region. In the year when the implementation of the EU strategy for the Danube region practically started, the theme of this year’s event is undoubtedly a current issue, whereas Vienna as the school’s venue symbolizes a regional network of the whole Central Europe along the Danube, in so many ways a unique and important European river.
For participation in this prestigious gathering, thirty participants from 12 countries were selected, amongst which representatives from our University: Marijana Alavuk from the Faculty of Law and Miroslav Stojsavljević from FIMEK. The paper by Marijana Alavuk entitled “The Role of Education in the Implementation of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, with special consideration for the position of Serbia“ was presented in the workshop called “Regional Cooperation along the Danube : Culture, Education, Science“, while “The Danube as the important Euro-Mediterranean Connection” by Miroslav Stojsavljević was part of the workshop “History and Geopolitics in the Danube Region”, coordinated by Professor Michael Weithmann, PhD, from the University of Passau. Both papers were very well received and evaluated and will be published in the conference proceedings, published once a year and distributed to all partner institutions and organizations of IDM and DRC.
Since 2004, the organization of the summer school has been in charge of the Vienna Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (Das Institut für den Donauraum und Mitteleuropa), the organization with 50 year-long tradition whose founders are the Austrian Ministries for Science, Culture and European Cooperation, as well as other institutions, such as the Chamber of Commerce, National Bank etc. The attendees were welcomed by the President of IDM, Erhard Busek, PhD, former Vice-president of the Austrian government and Minister and the current President of “Vienna Economic Forum“. Among the lecturers there were representatives from the Austrian Foreign Ministry, and some leading experts of organizations dealing with the River Danube, such as: Philip Weller, Executive Secretary of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, Otto Schwetz (Manager of Corridor VII), professors from the University of Pécs and University of Budapest (Hungary) and the University of Passau (Germany), as well as Rainer Műnz from Vienna’s “Erste School of Banking and Finance“, whose professional experience includes positions such as: advisor in the European Commission, OECD, World Bank, as well as in the presiding countries of EU: Greece, Slovenia and the Netherlands. Interesting lectures delivered by top experts accompanied by ample reading materials handed out to the attendees (a part of which is now kept in our university library) significantly contribute to a better understanding of the attitudes and policy of EU and member countries.
As part of the summer school, there were organized visits to certain institutions concerned with the traffic on the River Danube (“Via Donau“) and to the hydroelectric power plant “Freudenau“, which is situated in the city, and finally, attendees could experience some important cultural sights and events such as: Klosterneuburg, Schönbrunn, and acoustic guitar concert in the conference hall of the oldest technical/ agricultural university in Vienna, BOKU, where the whole summer school took place.
We take exceptional interest in the possibility of organizing and hosting the Ninth summer school of 2012 in Novi Sad, which will be discussed in the coming weeks with the IDM management.

Participation in the Danube Day Festivity
June 28 th, 2011
The World’s Day of the Danube River, which is also one of the Novi Sad landmarks, was celebrated in Novi Sad on 26 June, 2011 at the Danube River sidewalk. The aim of the festivity was to remind the citizens of our town that “we owe our lives to the River” and therefore have to pay greater attention to the growing pollution of the Danube while developing the attitude that we are obliged to leave a clean, non-polluted river to the coming young generations. The River Danube should be preserved not only as a resource which we can exploit, but also as a natural beauty which we all have the same right to enjoy. FIMEK and the Faculty of Law in Novi Sad took part in this festivity. Students were talking to passers-by along the Danube sidewalk in search of different opinions and viewpoints and, as members of the future intellectual elite, tried to grasp the gist of the problem and arrive at their own opinions and conclusions as regards this complex problem.

Students of FIMEK at the INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SCHOOL in Budapest In the next academic year
April 15th, 2011
Representatives of FIMEK- Olga Carić, MSc, the Director for International Cooperation at the University Business Academy, Teaching Assistant Miroslav Stojsavljević, MA and student Dražen Kovalčik, paid a visit on April 13, 2011 to the Budapest International Business School as FIMEK’s international academic partner. They participated in extensive talks with Mr. Gábor Andrási, PhD, as the Director for graduate studies at IBS and Ms. Zsuzsanna Ránki, as the Coordinator of IBS’s Business Network Center. Apart from the usual topics related to current events and work at both faculties, special emphasis was given to ongoing joint projects, primarily to the Tempus application in which both faculties have close collaboration. Another important topic for discussion was the future Career Office at FIMEK, whereas particular attention was given to the program which offers our students the possibility to attend the final year of studies in Budapest whereby upon completion of studies, students of FIMEK gain a double diploma- of FIMEK and British Oxford Brooks University.
This extremely interesting opportunity has been shown in detail at: http://www.fimek.edu.rs/pocetna3.html May 31 is the application deadline.
Student of the third year, Dražen Kovalčik, used this opportunity to take a closer look at all the facilities which he will be experiencing in the upcoming semester in Budapest. By courtesy of the Student Affairs Office representatives, Ms. Orsolya Hentes and Ms. Gabriella Szabó, Dražen got acquainted with all facilities at IBS, including housing capacities, fitness center, facilities for social life , as well as teaching rooms, labs and an extremely rich and modernly equipped library.
The international spirit of this higher education institution can be felt everywhere and students from all over the world can be found on the campus of IBS. Dražen also met several Serbian students who study at IBS and are extremely satisfied with all aspects of life and work in Budapest.
A conversation topic that aroused considerable interest at the host institution was related to this year’s international Summer school which FIMEK organizes for the first time in the last week of August (http://eng.fimek.edu.rs/summerschool/summer_school.html)
Mr. Andrási believes that IBS students will most likely take part in this Summer school and that in the future we will probably witness joint organization of similar events. Active promotion of FIMEK’s Summer school at IBS will present our faculty to a number of international students. This once again proves the outward and trans-national orientation of FIMEK, which follows the current trends in modern higher education.

FIMEK at an international conference: “Corridor 10 within the framework of social development of Serbia"
February 07th, 2011
The Center for Strategic Research and National Security, together with the German Hans Zaidel Foundation, organized a three-day international conference with the topic: “Corridor 10 within the framework of social development of Serbia“. Around 40 domestic and international academics, researchers and experts in different fields analyzed and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the currently biggest development project in Serbia. A professor at FIMEK and Center director, Mr. Slobodan Nešković, PhD, emphasized that motorway and railway construction of Corridor 10 represents a significant part of vital national importance for the Republic of Serbia. Economic diplomats and all relevant experts in the country play a crucial role in the implementation of this project. According to him, all country officials starting from the Serbian President and Prime Minister to all responsible ministers need to emphasize the importance of Corridor 10 and competitive advantages of Serbian economy outside Serbia’s borders. The importance of Corridor 10 and construction of high quality infrastructure is, according to Prof. Nešković, also obvious if we think of the FIAT Company, which has made its investment in the Kragujevac Zastava contingent upon motorway construction. This was at the same time a clause in a contract signed between Serbia and the Italian car manufacturer FIAT. For more details, click HERE.
