As such, entrepreneurial learning is a policy priority of the European Union and EU pre-accession countries and is a growing and developing field in today’s learning and education context.

Staff training: “Interactive methods used in group work“

December 15 and December 20, 2011

Staff training entitled “Interactive methods used in group work” was developed by the training agency TIM, a center for research and education, specially targeted at SEECEL project, level 5/6. The aim of this training was to make the FIMEK teaching staff better acquainted with various successful teaching methods- interactive classes, presentations, discussions, group work etc.

Workshop as a teaching method is characterized by interactive work and active implementation of presentations, experiences, creative tasks, debates etc. It is often contrasted with the traditional lecturing. It is very important to combine both approaches in teaching, adapting them to the course aims. In other words, the traditional lecturing can be used when introducing and teaching new concepts, while workshops are more suitable for developing students’ skills and abilities. Knowledge and skills acquired in this training will be used in everyday teaching at FIMEK in order to actively and continuously develop students’ critical thinking, entrepreneurial mindset, risk taking attitude, teamwork and other relevant skills.

This workshop plays an important role in the realization of SEECEL pilot project conducted at FIMEK within the study program: Engineering management in bio-technology. The mentioned training equipped our teaching staff with sufficient skills and competencies for knowledge transfer and development of an entrepreneurial way of thinking in students. All this applies primarily to the elective course “Entrepreneurship”, but the plan is to expand the scope of this teaching method to other courses as well.  What is more, in the course of this training a team of our teachers became trained for future trainings in the field of entrepreneurship for all interested students and teachers.

The training lasted eight hours. On the first day of workshop, through four stages, the participants had a chance to get acquainted with different methods of work:

On the second day of workshop, the participants independently created thirty-minute workshops on some selected topics, applying various successful teaching methods. All participants were highly motivated and took active part in the workshop. Some of the participants’ comments are given below:

EXTREMELY USEFUL TRAINING: “Very educational and interactive teaching method”, “the workshop was interesting, with good and stimulating interaction among participants”; “The workshop truly achieved its aim”, “We expanded our knowledge in the domain of interactive teaching methods…”

APPLICABILITY IN TEACHING: “The methods are applicable especially in practical classes”, “We improved ourselves as teachers and lecturers”, “There was a lot of useful information and advice that we can use in our future work.”

The training was also beneficial for:

STRENTHENING THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG TEACHERS AND TEAMWORK: “We achieved closer interpersonal relationships which is crucial for further cooperation and work, having improved our relationships and raising them to a higher level”. “The atmosphere within the group is excellent”. It is important to emphasize that our students’ skills and competencies will be measured before and after the lectures, after which we can analyze the influence of the implemented methods on our students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes.
